Image Filters
Give your entire photo collection a new look, right inside Rando - no editing, no exporting, and completely free.
Overview
Image Filters apply a display-time look to your photos as Rando shows them. Choose from four presets, and the filter applies everywhere you view your photos: the main grid, the standard slideshow, and every Collage layout. On iPhone and iPad (Rando 2.0 and later) the same four presets apply to the slideshow and to TV Mode.
Your originals are always safe
Filters only change how Rando displays your photos. The files on your drive are never modified, re-saved, or exported with a filter baked in. Turn a filter off at any time and your photos look exactly as they did before.
Free for everyone
On Mac and Windows, Image Filters are free: no Pro subscription, no lock icon.
The Presets
Choose from four presets, always listed in this order:
- None - Your photos exactly as they are. This is the default.
- Black & White - Classic grayscale with a light contrast boost.
- Sepia - A warm, antique tone over a grayscale base.
- Vintage - Muted color with lifted blacks, for a faded, nostalgic look.
Where It Applies
Filters apply to:
- The main photo grid (thumbnails).
- The standard slideshow - still photos, animated GIF/WebP, and video preview frames.
- The Collage slideshow - every layout (Flow and Scatter, plus Grid and Varied where available).
Filters do not apply to:
- Folder/album picker dialogs.
- Tag thumbnails.
- Preferences previews.
Where to Change It
There are six places to set your filter, and all of them keep the same setting in sync:
Top Bar Filter Button
In the main window's top bar, a Filter button sits between the sort control and the Slideshow button (camera icon on Mac, ◐ on Windows). Click it to pick a preset directly - no need to open Preferences. The icon tints to your accent color whenever a filter other than None is active, so you always have an at-a-glance reminder that a filter is on.
Filter Menu (Menu Bar)
A top-level Filter menu lists all four presets with a checkmark on the active one. Keyboard shortcuts jump straight to any preset: ⌃⌘0/1/2/3 on Mac, Ctrl+Alt+0/1/2/3 on Windows (0 = None, 1 = Black & White, 2 = Sepia, 3 = Vintage).
Preferences
Open Preferences → General, and look in the Images section for the Filter picker, right next to "Animate thumbnails."
Quick Settings (during a slideshow)
While a slideshow is running, open Quick Settings and look under Display for the same Filter picker. Change it without stopping the show - the new look applies immediately.
Slideshow HUD Filter Button
During a slideshow, move your mouse to reveal the on-screen controls and click the Filter button to pop open the same four-preset menu. Works in both Standard and Collage slideshows. See Slideshow Mode for the full overlay control bar.
F Cycle Key
While a slideshow is running, press F (no modifier key) to step through the presets in order - None → Black & White → Sepia → Vintage → None - without opening any menu. A brief toast names the preset you just switched to. This is the fastest way to compare looks one-handed in fullscreen. See Keyboard Shortcuts for the full shortcut reference.
Wherever you change it, the setting is a single one that applies app-wide - there's no separate filter for the grid versus a slideshow versus Collage. Only the slideshow HUD button and the F key show a toast; the other four entry points change the filter silently.
iPhone and iPad
Settings → Slideshow → Image Filter, or tap the style button on the slideshow controls. On iPhone and iPad, Image Filters are a Rando Mobile / Rando Pro feature: free users can preview them for up to 10 minutes a day (a budget shared with TV Mode and premium transitions), after which the filter turns off until tomorrow or an upgrade.
Live Updates
Changing the filter takes effect immediately:
- The photo grid re-renders right away.
- A running slideshow (standard or Collage) picks up the new look without restarting or interrupting playback.
Platform Notes (Windows)
Two small, deliberate differences on Windows are worth knowing about:
- Animated GIFs and WebPs: while any filter other than None is active, an animated image shows a filtered still of its first frame instead of playing its animation. Switch back to None and it animates normally again. (On Mac, animated images keep playing while filtered.)
- Collage tiles: when you change the filter during a Collage slideshow, tiles already on screen pick up the new look the next time they naturally refresh, rather than all at once instantly. The main grid and the standard slideshow on Windows both update immediately - this delay is specific to Collage tiles. (On Mac, everything - including Collage - updates instantly.)
