Why you're seeing this warning: The preview version of Rando is not yet digitally signed, which triggers Windows security protection.
What This Means
Windows Defender SmartScreen and other security features warn you when downloading or running unsigned software. This is a good security feature that protects you from malicious software.
Why Rando Preview Isn't Signed Yet
We're a small bootstrapped company, and code signing certificates for Windows cost \$300-600 per year. Rather than pass this cost to our preview users, we're working on getting Rando into the Microsoft Store, where it will be automatically signed and trusted.
How to Install the Preview
- When downloading: Your browser may warn you. Click "Keep" or "Keep anyway" to proceed.
- When running the installer: Windows Defender will show a blue popup. Click "More info" then "Run anyway".
- First run after installation: You may see another warning. Again, click "More info" then "Run anyway".
Coming Soon: The Microsoft Store version (Q2 2025) will install without any warnings. Store-distributed apps are automatically signed and trusted by Windows.
Is It Safe?
Yes! Rando is safe software from Interapp Development. We've been developing software since 2009. The warnings are purely because we haven't paid for a signing certificate yet. Rando:
- Never uploads your photos anywhere
- Works 100% offline with your local files
- Contains no malware or tracking
- Is the same codebase as our Mac App Store version
We appreciate your patience as we work toward the official Microsoft Store release, which will eliminate these warnings entirely.
